This SiFi game was played on 2010-07-26 at Richard's place using Stargrunt II-Rules (set in ' Stargrunt II universe ') and 25mm miniatures. This report was written by Matthias.
The ESU started a large-scale offensive against the NSL, and drove them back several kilometers, before the NSL were able to establish a new frontline and stem the tide.
A small depleted platoon of NSL Jägers, who were exposed to extensive frontline service for several weeks, had been assigned guard duty of a small heliport (named Hoverfield by the troops) to get a much needed rest. The Heliport was target of ESU artillery strikes some days before, and rendered useless. The Jägers were tasked to guard the place until the next available engineer unit was able to make the facility usable again.
As the platoon's radio broke down, they heard the nearby fighting of the ESU offensive, but had no possibility to find out what was really going on. They also did not know that they were surrounded by ESU troops now.
After their initial success, and when the frontlines were deadlocked again, the ESU command concentrated their attention on the Heliport. They were interested in using it as a forward base for helicopter support at the front. In the offensive Hoverfield was cold-shouldered, as aerial recon did not show any activity there after the artillery strikes. A light ESU platoon was send to scout the airfield, especially to assess the damage that was done by the previous artillery strikes. No one expected to still find NSL troops there...

The NSL were all in the barracks (right upper corner with the water tower on roof) and recuperated by Bier and Sauerkraut. As they heard the fighting going on around them the previous days, they posted sentries, therefore each squad sent two men as a Detachment to various guarding posts around the heliport. Additionally, two Dummy counters were rolled and were placed with the guard counters. The troops in the barrack were only allowed to act the turn after the shootion started. |

Overview of the whole battlefield.
Results of the ESU artillery strikes.
Power Generator on the left, barracks on the right. The APC did not take part in the battle, it was just shown as one of two APCs which will be available ready painted for the next game [ no pressure intended Rich ;-) ].
The NSL Jäger platoon. We rolled for battlefield casualties before the game, which removed some of the grunts.

The ESU platoon.
The ESU advanced on Hoverfield in a L formation. One squad advanced on the road, the command squad entered in the corner, second squad advanced through the vegetation opposite the small hill inside the compound...
... and third squad directly went for the main entrance.
Second squad spotted for the counter in the tower and with the second attempt identified two NSL Jäger guards. Third squad opened fire and killed one of them.
Another guard team in turn opened fire on ESU third squad and also killed one of their numbers.
One Jäger squad grabbed their weapons and hurried out of the barracks, and as soon as they entered the street they saw ESU troops moving on the crossroad.
Third Jäger Squad rushed throught the small courtyard into the compound from where the gunfire had erupted.
The second ESU squad advanced and tried to eliminate the last sentry in the tower, but only decorated the concrete with some nice holes.
First ESU squad moved to engage the NSLs that just left the barracks. For some obscure reason they definitely wanted to take control of the rubbish dump.
Third Jäger squad went into position at the edge of the small wood and opened fire on 2nd ESU squad.
Having suffered casualties, the ESU squad retreated behind the hill to care for their wounded and get out of harms way.
The Jägers on the left flank also went into position among the trees to repel the ESU attack on the rubbish dump.
ESU third squad used a demo charge to blast open the door of the control tower. In a desperate attempt to save the sole remaining guard inside, 3rd Jäger squad rushed forward, guns blazing. Unfortunately they only caused a suppression.
3rd ESU squad returned fire, but with more success.
After 2nd ESU squad joined in, but missed although they fired at point blank range, the NSLs sought cover behind the hill.
1st ESU Squad luckily (incomprehensible for the Jägers facing them) occupied the rubbish dump.
The ESU command squad advanced and heroically fired on the 3rd Jäger squad from behind.
3rd ESU Squad stormed the tower and took the lonely defender prisoner.
1st ESU squad sufferd casualties from the Jägers, but still felt happy with their position. Wasn't their nose able to perceive the smell of the place?
2nd ESU squad climbed the fence.
1st ESU squad retreated behind the trees to their backs, obvioulsy it wasn't as nice in the rubbish dump as they had thought.
The ESU command squad moved towards the rubbish dump as well... something there must be very attractive for the ESU troops...
The two sentries facing the main entrance sniped at the ESU troops that just occupied the tower, and hit their leader right between the eyes. The second on command turned out to be a worse leader.
After third ESU squad had retreated back into the barracks, their LT sent them out again to drive the ESU from Hoverfield. They rushed out of the courtcard and killed two 2nd ESU squad members, which had moved up in the meantime.
The ESU command squad tried to climb the fence to support 2nd squad, but got hung up in the fence.
3rd NSL squad heroically charged the wood to throw 2nd ESU squad out... but they lost two while the ESU only lost one.
The lone NSL surviver's confidence dropped to routed.
After 1st ESU squad had cared to their wounded, they again advanced into into the rubbish dump area. What's their obsession about that place...?
The ESU command squad finally managed to climb the fence, and sourrounded the lone NSL Jäger, who surrendered. The two surviving members of ESU 2nd squad then joined their command squad, feeling saver with them.
Finally, the Jägers were to curious considering the importance of the rubbish dump. To take a closer look, they first had to get rid of the ESUs
and charged them. In the first round of combat, the NSL saw gunner was dispatched of, while the other combat ended in a draw.
In the second round, the Jäger prevailed. Only one ESU trooper was left of 1st squad.
At this point it was quite late in the evening, and we had to pack up. Of course we still had some minutes to discuss how the game would have ended. Each of us argumented, that he would not have managed to win.
I thought my NSL troops were too decimated and with two detachments still on the far side of the compound too spread out to effectively counter the ESU attack.
The two ESU players also thought they had already lost too many grunts to dislodge the Jägers from the barracks and the rubbish dump.
But we agreed that it was above all much fun.
Unfortunately the time did not suffice to solve the rubbish dump mistery...
