Execution

Cryx deployment. Silly me forgot to take a picture of Menoth deployment.

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 1]

The board at the end of Menoth turn 1. The Vanquisher and the Revenger both got one Focus, which they used to run forward after being shielded by the hymn of the choir. Kreoss cast Lamentation and then Defender's Ward on the Knights Exemplar which then moved up behind the Revenger.

mediaobject

[Cryx Turn 1]

All Cryx 'jacks got one Focus and ran. The Defiler defiled some rocks for the lack of other targets.

mediaobject

[Cryx Turn 1]

Blackbane´s Ghost Raiders moved along the right cryxian flank.

mediaobject

[Cryx Turn 1]

Most troops advanced into the middle of the village, while two 'jacks moved around the left .

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 2]

Kreoss upkept Lamentation and Defender's Ward. The Repenter and Revenger each got one Focus.

The Vanquisher shot at the Mechanithrall in front of the others, but was slightly out of range. The shot deviated harmlessly.

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 2]

The Revenger ran over to the left flank. The choir continued to sing of Menoth's Shielding, blessing both the Revenger and Vanquisher again. Kreoss then channeled Cleansing Fire onto the Ghost Raiders through the Revengers Arc Node. The spell also was out of range and deviated, but still hit and killed one of the ghosts. The Repenter sprayed the Defiler with Menoth's Fury, but the flames did not reach the Defiler.

mediaobject

[Cryx Turn 2]

The Slayer received 3 Focus, Deneghra kept the rest for herself. The Defiler then advanced and shot his sludge cannon at the Knights. He missed both covered by the template though, one of them due to the bonus of Defender's Ward.

mediaobject

[Cryx Turn 2]

The Slayer then charged the Revenger. He destroyed the Revengers right arm and the cortex, before he was pushed back by the Repulsor Shield.

Next, the Mechanithralls charged as well. One piled up on the Revenger as well, but did not do any damage and also got pushed back. The one member of the choir who was charged was quickly mashed. The Knight could evade the attack.

Finally, Deneghra cast Scourge through the Defiler on the Repenter, caused 5 points of damage and knocked him down.

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 3]

Kreoss gave 1 Focus to the Vanquisher, 2 to the Repenter and kept the rest for himself. He dropped Defender's Ward but upkept Lamentation.

The choir then changed its tune, and intoned the hymn of Battle on the Revenger and the Vanquisher. The badly mauled Revenger then drew back and faced the Ghosts. Kreoss arc noded Cleansing Fire through him on the Ghosts, but again missed. Luckily, the template only deviated 1" and still hit the intended two models, which were both killed.

Then Kreoss popped his feat.

The Vanquisher let loose with another portion of Menoth's Fury, aiming at the now knocked down Slayer. He hit him with a boosted damage roll for 9 damage points. The nearby Mechanithrall was hit but not wounded (snake eyes!!). Both models were set on fire though.

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 3]

The Knights Exemplar then charged the Mechanithralls and killed three (auto-kills).

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 3]

The Repenter shook of his knock down, moved up to the Defiler, and clobbered him with 14 points of damage caused. The Defiler's Arc Node was destroyed.

mediaobject

[Cryx Turn 3]

Luckily for the Cryx, the fire continuous effect on both the Slayer and Mechanithrall expired. The Slayer received 2 Focus, while Deneghra camped the rest.

All Cryxian models then got up back to their feet and slightly repositioned. Deneghra then used the Arc Node of the Deathripper to cast Crippling Grasp on the Knights. She then cast Venom, which could have hit two Knights, but missed the first (needed to roll a 3 and rolled a double one) and then did not wound the second (would have needed to roll one point of damage more), but left him with the corrosion continuous effect. Then Deneghra popped her feat.

mediaobject

[Cryx Turn 3]

The Defiler shot his Sludge Cannon and killed two of the Knights.

mediaobject

[Cryx Turn 3]

The Slayer then moved towards the Vanquisher, receiving two free strikes from the choir, wich both missed. The Slayer then attacked the Vanquisher, and destroyed half the damage boxes of the Menite 'jack, including the right arm and cortex.

Finally, Blackbane's Ghost Raiders entered the fight. They killed 2 members of the choir, and resurected the dead to swell their own number.

mediaobject

[Cryx Turn 3]

The Vanquisher was again hit, but not damaged. Still he was set on fire.

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 4]

The burning Vanquisher received two more points of damage from the flames still engulfing him, while the corrosion continuous effect on the Knight Exemplar expired. Kreoss gave 1 Focus to the Repenter, and kept the rest for himself.

The Revenger then attacked the Ghost behind the Vanquisher, hit him with his shield but did not wound him. He pushed him back, and in the process the Vanquisher to the right.

With his crippled chain weapon, the Vanquisher had no chance to damage the Slayer, so he stepped back to bring his uncrippled gun to bear. He got free striked twice, from both the Slayer and one Ghost, for a total of 11 damage. This crippled the left arm with the gun. As a result, his shot missed the Slayer, but only deviated slightly. He set the Slayer on fire, killed another member of the choir, and caused 1 point of damage to Blackbane, who now also burned.

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 4]

The Repenter shot flames at the defiler, but even the boosted to hit roll did not manage to bring the flames on target.

The Knights Exemplar were only able to move 1" due to the spell on them and Deneghra's feat. Still, two managed to attack the Deathripper, but weakened as they were, both missed.

Kreoss then cast Cleansing Fire on Blackbane. As one could expect by now, the spell missed. The deviation was small enough to still engulf him in flames, but he only received two points of damage and still 'lived'.

mediaobject

[Cryx Turn 4]

The continuous fire effect on Blackbane automatically expired, as he became incorporeal again. The Slayer continued to burn and suffered 1 point of damage.

Deneghra spent one Focus on the upkeep spell cast on the Exemplar Knights, allocated 3 to the Deathripper and 3 to the Defiler.

The Deathripper then put the Focus to good use and killed the two Knights engaging him. The Defiler then also used up his Focus and sludge cannoned the two remaining Knights.

mediaobject

[Cryx Turn 4]

Kreoss then got set upon from all sides: two Mechanithralls, a Brute Thrall and a Ghost all attacked him, and left him with one health point only!

mediaobject

[Cryx Turn 4]

The Revenger then got set on fire by another Ghost, and the Slayer finished off the Vanquisher.

mediaobject

[Menoth Turn 5]

Things looked pretty grim for Kreoss, who only had two light Warjacks left, and one was already badly damaged, while he himself was barely conscious.

Kreoss kept 5 Focus and gave 2 to the Repenter. He did not upkeep Lamentation any longer.

The Repenter positioned himself to burn the Ghost and one Mechanithrall to death.

Kreoss then showed off his martial prowess and killed the Brutethrall. Following that, he only needed to roll a 5+ to hit the Mechanithralls, but rolled a double two twice!

Debriefing

As it was quite late we quit the game at this point, and did not bother to see who would finally kill poor Kreoss.

  • Cryx (Bernd)

This was the first time I waged war with infantry on my side. The Blackbanes on the right flank were a little bit far from action maybe I should have deployed them on the other flank. But then they would have been in reach of Matthias' arcnode who could have killed them with its warcaster's spells...

When Kreoss popped his feat I was a little bit frightened because only then I realized that infantry loses its movement or its action when standing up. Hence they were not able to do anything the next turn. But my feat canceled his feat pretty good and he was not able to do that much either.

This game we both kept our warcasters pretty safe and it was the first time that I won in an attrition based game style. I think key to my success was that my expensive units, especially the Slayer, were able to deal a good amount of damage, while Matthias only managed to kill the cheaper stuff.

  • Protectorate of Menoth (Matthias)

This was another very intersting game. At the end of turn two everything still looked very balanced, something we felt we had not experienced in any of the earlier games. Then, with the two consecutive turns of feating, things quickly changed.

In hindsight I think I should not have used Kreoss feat at the time I did. It did allow for some kills and damage, but this was not substantial enough, although it did slow down the Cryxians on their following turn.

Deneghra's feat in return (combined with the spell on the Knights Exemplar) left me unable to do anything useful in my following turn. The turn after that, I did not had any troops left. I should have used the crippled Revenger to hinder the Slayer reaching the Vanquisher, which would have allowed me one more round of shooting or a charge. I thought I placed the choir members in a position to block the Slayer, but missjudged their placement by some milimeters.

As it was, my opponent cunningly outmanoeuvred me in the end and won deservedly.
